7 more coronavirus deaths in Dallas County ‘a somber reminder’ of danger; Tarrant County adds 606 cases

Revised to include information from Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman and Rockwall counties.

Seven more coronavirus deaths in Dallas County are “a somber reminder of the dangerous nature of COVID-19,” County Judge Clay Jenkins said Wednesday.

The deaths, which included a Dallas woman in her 20s who had no underlying health conditions, bring the county’s toll from the virus to 380.

The other victims were four Dallas residents — a woman in her 40s, a man in his 50s, a woman in her 60s and a woman in her 80s — a DeSoto man in his 60s and a Seagoville man in his 70s who lived at a long-term care facility.

County officials also reported 544 new positive tests for the coronavirus. Dallas County has had 21,882 confirmed cases, or about 8.3 for every 1,000 residents. The county does not report a number of recoveries from the illness.

On Tuesday, the county reported 601 cases and 20 deaths, both records.

Jenkins said in a written statement that the county previously saw cases surge about two weeks after Easter and Memorial Day, holidays when people may have taken fewer precautions as they celebrated.

“That must not happen” for the Fourth of July, he said.

“If it does, our hospitals are at risk of being overrun later, Dallas Cryptocurrency News many more people will get sick and die, and our economy will be set back for months,” Jenkins said.

He urged residents to celebrate Independence Day only with people they are regularly in close contact with and to take precautions including social distancing when around other people.

“Lives depend on it,” he said.

Health officials have been focused on hospitalizations, emergency-room visits and admissions to intensive care units as indicators of the coronavirus’ spread locally.

Those numbers remained high, Jenkins said, though an “issue related to reporting” led to an apparent drop-off in the county’s number of hospitalizations Tuesday. On Monday, a record-high 619 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized in Dallas County.

Tarrant County

A day after reporting a record 605 new coronavirus cases, Tarrant County announced 606 more positive tests Wednesday.

County officials also announced three more deaths from COVID-19.

The victims were two Fort Worth women, in their 50s and 60s, Dallas Stock Market  and a Mansfield man in his 60s. All three had underlying health problems, health officials said.

Tarrant County has had 231 deaths from the virus and 12,950 confirmed cases — about 6.2 for every 1,000 residents.

According to the county’s data, 472 patients remain hospitalized, while 5,323 have recovered from the illness. The number of hospitalizations has doubled since mid-June.

Collin County

An 89-year-old Plano woman was Collin County’s 43rd coronavirus victim, officials said Wednesday.

The woman, who lived at Arbor Hills Memory Care, died at the facility Tuesday night. On Friday, Arbor Hills said 25 of its 28 patients had tested positive for the virus, as well as 12 of its 50 employees.

Collin County reported 117 more COVID-19 cases Wednesday. That raises the county’s total number of confirmed cases to 3,114, or about 3 for every 1,000 residents.

According to the county’s data, 130 patients remain hospitalized, while 2,396 have recovered.

On Tuesday night, Plano’s City Council approved a measure that makes a “strong recommendation” that businesses require masks for customers and employees. Dallas Press Release It has no enforcement mechanism, and Mayor Harry LaRosiliere — who had pushed for masks to be required — said the new ordinance is no more useful than a Facebook post asking people to wear masks.

Denton County

Officials in Denton County reported 106 new cases of the coronavirus Wednesday.

That raises the county’s total to 2,951, or 3.3 for every 1,000 residents. Dallas Medical News Thirty-seven county residents have died from COVID-19; no deaths were reported Wednesday.

County officials say 55 patients are hospitalized with the virus, while 1,164 have recovered from it.

Other counties

The Texas Department of State Health Services took over reporting of coronavirus cases for several North Texas counties last week, though Rockwall and Johnson counties have continued to report their own data when possible.

According to the latest numbers:

Rockwall County has had 375 cases, with 16 deaths and 266 recoveries.

Kaufman County has reported 627 cases and four deaths.

Ellis County has had 862 total cases, including 19 deaths.

Johnson County has seen 448 cases of the virus, with four deaths.
